BWSSB Regulation on Individual Water Metering

Not all apartment complexes have individual water meters for each flat. In Bengaluru, a common water meter installed by BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) measures the water to the complex through a meter, but not for individual flats, as there is only a single connection and meter from the BWSSB. In May 2020, BWSSB introduced a new regulation that mandates internal water meters for every flat in apartment complexes. Each apartment is responsible for installing these meters within its premises. The introduction of a penalty was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to be levied later.

What does the regulation say:

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has made internal water meters compulsory for certain buildings.

• Existing Buildings: Buildings with three or more houses and a total area of 2,400 sq. ft or more must install internal water meters.
  


• New Buildings: Any new building with three or more houses and a total area exceeding 1,200 sq. ft must also have internal water meters.
